African Nursing Advocate Visits Bay Area; Promotes the Gretta Foundation
Bay Area Non-Profits Trains Nurses for Africa

(San Francisco, CA) -
The Gretta Foundation announced that Ugandan nursing advocate Sister Cathy Nakiboneka will be visiting the Bay Area this September 11 to 15th to share her frontline nursing experience both as a nurse and as Head of Instruction at the Ugandan Catholic Medical Bureau. Sister Cathy is a Gretta Graduate and currently oversees the selection of Gretta Foundation Nursing and Midwifery Scholars and mentors them during their programs. Sister Cathy will be making several appearances in the Bay Area to discuss the challenges faced in nursing and health care in Uganda.
The Gretta Foundation funds Direct-Entry and Scale-up Diploma programs for nursing and mid-wife candidates. Emphasis is placed on supporting conflict survivors and AIDS orphans. Each scholarship provides the recipient with an annual tuition, room and board, living allowance, books, school uniforms, and clinical supplies. Graduating scholars are required to serve in their country’s clinics and hospitals for a period of time commensurate with each year of academic assistance. To date, The Gretta Foundation has funded 29 Gretta Graduates with another 11 Gretta Scholars currently being funded.

Meg Styles, President and founder of The Gretta Foundation said, “We are so thankful to be able to introduce Sister Cathy to our many Bay Area supporters and donors. We believe it is crucial that our supporters hear first-hand from those that they are supporting. Sister Cathy is an amazing person and a great representative of the work being done by The Gretta Foundation in Sub-Saharan Africa.”
The Gretta Foundation’s mission is to increase the number of frontline nurses and midwives in disease-burdened countries through the provision of in-country scholarships. The Gretta Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit founded in 2007 by Meg Styles in honor of her mother, the late Dr. Margretta (“Gretta”) Madden Styles. Dr. Styles was Dean of the UCSF School of Nursing from 1976 through 1985 before becoming President of the American Nursing Association, and the International Council of Nursing.
