City Center Banners Honor Lawrence Livermore Fusion Discovery

Nine 23-foot banners at City Center designed by San Ramon artist and LLNL employee James Wickboldt honor the groundbreaking discovery.

SAN RAMON, CA — In December 2022, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory made world history and headlines when they achieved fusion ignition, the first step in reaching a limitless energy source that does not result in pollution or harmful nuclear waste.

To honor this milestone, City Center is displaying a series of banners honoring this momentous achievement. The “Bringing Star Power to Earth” installation features nine 23-foot banners telling the story of ignition. The banners show artwork used in the first ignition announcements, lasers, computer modeling and simulation, experimental design, diagnostics, optics, and target fabrication. They also feature images of the people essential to the breakthrough.

The banners were designed by San Ramon native James Wickboldt, who has worked for LLNL since 2017, and has had his artwork featured in LLNL publications, and The New York Times. John Jett, who leads the multimedia communications team for the NIF and Photon Science directorate, also contributed to the design.
