Empowering our local students to succeed!

Empowering education for underprivileged children through individualized learning

Academic Avengers is a non-profit organization founded by San Ramon Valley Unified School District high school students. We are dedicated to providing students with personalized, free academic support and aim to bridge the educational opportunity gap. Through individualized attention, engaging instruction, and fostering collaboration and inclusivity, we are focused on empowering students to reach their full potential and achieve academic success and strive to create a brighter future through education.

Mahita Chava, co-founder and Vice President of Academic Avengers, is a junior at California High School. Mahita says her journey started about three years ago when she learned about the difficulties encountered by students at Oakland schools. In her first project with the district, she was assigned to work with two middle school students to help them with math concepts. During these initial sessions, she noticed many of them were absent or late; moreover, many more never received a strong foundation of basic mathematical concepts. Through conversations with administration, she learned many students had limited resources and support for learning due to learning difficulties and personal situations at home. Not only did these sessions enhance her math skills, but they taught her the importance of showing compassion and providing encouragement to others.

After a year of teaching on her own, Mahita’s session slowly expanded beyond 2 students. Parents and teachers were reaching out to her as their students wanted academic support. Inspired by her own teaching sessions and wanting to help all the interested students, Mahita decided to start her own nonprofit organization. With Namrita Iyyar, Anuhya Chadalawada, and Charvi Vemparala, Mahita has been able to expand the nonprofit to help more students beyond Oakland to include students in Berkeley and San Francisco school districts.

The program's goal is to foster inclusivity and collaboration, uncover each individual student's learning style, and modify and cater the lessons to their needs.
