San Ramon Names New Public Works Director
Brian Bornstein has worked as an engineer for the city since 2007.

SAN RAMON, CA — Brian Bornstein will serve as San Ramon’s next director of public works effective June 17, the city announced. Bornstein has served as San Ramon’s city engineer and division manager since 2012, and worked with the city since 2007.
After receiving a BS in civil engineering from UC Davis, Bornstein began his civil engineering career in 1994 as an assistant engineer at Brown and Caldwell, where he worked on site civil design and specifications, for the UC Davis Environmental Services Building, recycled water pipeline design for the Dublin San Ramon Services District, and various sanitary sewer design projects with the Central Contra Costa Sanitary District.
In 1998, he joined the city of Brentwood, where he spent nine years in various engineering roles. He provided a review of residential and commercial developments in what was then the fastest growing city in California. He also managed capital projects to increase operations and safety, including roadway, bridge, and utility projects, and infrastructure for new schools opening almost every year.

Bornstein began working in San Ramon in 2007 as a senior engineer, where he supervised Development Engineering and Encroachment programs. He was also the project manager of the $14 million Bollinger Canyon Road Widening Project in conjunction with City Center development, and supervised oversight of the Dougherty Valley Development for a 25-year project build-out.
In 2012, he was promoted to city engineer and division manager of the Engineering Division of San Ramon’s Public Works Department. He oversaw various programs, including the Capital Improvement Program Administration, Development Engineering, Traffic Engineering, Engineering Inspection, and Permitting/Permit Center Operations for Engineering.

Notable projects include City Center coordination, CCTA Innovate 680 Program, Faria Preserve development, and the Police and Fire Public Safety Complex. He also oversaw significant citywide traffic signal system and operational upgrades, the transition of Bishop Ranch Business Park to mixed-use housing, including the City Walk Master Plan, and the redevelopment of the former Chevron Park property. He also helped create a 5-year Capital Improvement program database, and served periodically as acting public works director.
“Throughout his tenure with the City of San Ramon, Brian has played a pivotal role in enhancing our city’s infrastructure and has been instrumental in the successful completion of numerous projects,” City Manager Steven Spedowfski said in a statement. “His deep understanding of our community’s needs and his proactive leadership style makes him the ideal person for this position.”
