📰 News we're reading

• Newsom unveils final California budget proposal, projecting smaller-than-anticipated deficit (abc10.com) — California’s new budget proposal projects a much smaller deficit than earlier forecasts, and Santa Cruz’s own Sen. John Laird is helping explain why. He says updated revenue data and different assumptions about a downturn narrowed the gap, while lawmakers now begin months of negotiations that will shape funding for schools, health care, and safety-net programs across the state.

• Bob Weir, a Virtuoso of Hot Pants (nytimes.com) — Bob Weir’s famously short “Bobby Shorts” even came up when he and bandmate Mickey Hart announced in 2008 that the Grateful Dead archive would go to UC Santa Cruz. The piece looks back on how his tiny cutoffs, preppy polos, and Birkenstocks turned the late guitarist into an unlikely men’s style icon far beyond Deadhead circles.

• Thousands gather in Santa Cruz for anti-ICE protest (santacruzsentinel.com) — Thousands of residents packed Ocean Street in Santa Cruz on Sunday for a large anti-ICE demonstration mourning the police shooting of Renee Good in Minnesota. The protest, organized by Indivisible Santa Cruz County, stretched from Water Street to Soquel Avenue and followed earlier vigils in Santa Cruz and Watsonville, reflecting strong local outrage over federal immigration enforcement tactics.
