Lilah Hosni helped Lighthouse ease to its win over arch rival Hilcrest Christian in volleyball

When she was a sixth grader, Lilah Hosni chased a coyote.

The students were on a snow trip at Big Bear, and the stalking coyote ran off with her backpack. Lilah was more afraid of losing her backpack than of the savage beast and gave chase.

The coyote dropped the bag.

On Tuesday, Lilah summoned her predator instinct once again on the volleyball court to help Lighthouse Christian Academy send Hillcrest Christian of Thousand Oaks home hungry.

The Saints volleyball won comfortably in three sets 25-11, 25-16, 25-21 at Penmar Recreational Center.

It's not easy or automatic for a freshman, like Lilah, to play at the level of her teammates, who are sophomores and juniors. More importantly, they are club players. Lilah is not.

It's easy to be intimidated. You go on the court hoping to not screw up.

To not cower among the titans on the team, Lilah tightened her mouth, tensed her eyes and focused. The freshman went full huntress.

It worked.

While Jillian Jenkins made 15 kills, Karine Keyser whacked serve after serve, Riley Gonzalez pinpointed her play, Lucy Young and Eden Garcia wreaked havoc on the rivals, Lilah filled a valuable role and helped the overall victory.
