Selfish soccer bodes ominously for couple

After running up the score against Westmark, Lighthouse posted two new forwards. They didn't pass to each other despite being a couple.

Let's hope this is not a foreshadowing of selfishness for this couple.

But neither Antonio Pellot nor Abigail Aguilar passed the ball to each other when they were placed as forwards in Lighthouse Christian Academy's 10-1 trouncing of Westmark Thursday.

"He wasn't assisting me," Abby said.

"You were on the other side of the field," Antonio responded.

"It was definitely a learning experience, and next time you'll see us making cross and making goals," Abby said.

It was the game of couples. Not only boyfriend and girlfriend spent minutes of the game up top, so did Egypt and Ethiopia.

While the bf and gf remained scoreless, Africa hit one each.

Kirollos Abdalla (parents from Egypt) showed his blood knocking one in. Liyat Belay (parents from Ethiopia) trundled a ball through defenders and smacked it into the net.

Kiro learned toughness from Saints football, Liyat from volleyball.

After losing its opener Tuesday, the Saints dominated in a slower game on the Westmark field in Encino.

The Saints were passing better and covering the lanes better. Normal forward Christian Boatwright scored early on a bright pass from Marley Rancipher, who followed up with a goal of his on some smart play.

Midfielder Zion Jenkins beat the defender on a high speed chase down the right lane to hook the ball into the goal.

At half time, Lighthouse had 5 goals, Westmark had 0.

In the second half, Coach Hosea Ashcraft swapped players to give practice to the B-team. Goalie Nile Hosni was pulled out of goal and placed in forward and aggressively pushed for a goal until he succeeded.

Twins Sean and Owen Toomey kept laid claim to the midfield, rarely allowing an intruder pass, and setting up key plays for their teammates.

Keziah Mendez was doing some staunch defending but threw her hands up to cover herself when a ball was shot with power in the area. The ref called a handball, and Westmark nailed the PK low and on the post to get some satisfaction.

"We ended up just having a blast, all the kids were enjoying it," said Coach Hosea. "It was fun."
