Updated: Two Injured in Head-On Crash on Highway 116

Connecting road temporarily reopened

Two people were seriously injured when their Ford Crown Victoria crashed head-on into a tractor-trailer on state Highway 116 east of Petaluma this morning, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

The Ford was traveling west toward Petaluma east of Adobe Road when the driver made an unsafe turning movement and crashed into an eastbound 18-wheel tractor-trailer around 9:45 a.m., CHP Officer Jaret Paulson said.

Both vehicles sustained major front-end damage, Paulson said. The driver and a female passenger were taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

The collision pushed the Ford into a Jeep Liberty that was traveling behind it, Paulson. The drivers of the big-rig and Jeep were not injured, Paulson said.

The highway was shut down at 10 a.m. One-way traffic was allowed through the crash scene beginning at about 10:45 a.m., and Highway 116 reopened around 11 a.m.

The road will be closed again when another tow truck for the big-rig arrives, according to the CHP.
