NHSF awards almost $61,000 in program grants to teachers

New Haven Schools Foundation annual classroom support presented April 20, 2022

Union City, CA April 15, 2022 – The New Haven Schools Foundation (NHSF) announced today that it will award $60,872 in project funding to teachers from the New Haven Unified School District (NHUSD). The awards will be presented on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, to teachers from 11 different schools in the district.

Each year, NHSF provides funding to teachers for classroom programs and student enrichment activities at every grade level. An unprecedented 59 grant proposals were submitted by teachers this year, and with the help of generous donors, NHSF will fund 41 important projects in our local schools. Since 2009, the organization has provided $325,000 in funding to New Haven school projects.

Individual grants, ranging from $96 to over $7000, were made by possible by NHSF fundraising events, a matching donation from Albert and Marsha Badella, and contributions from the Brian Kelly Fund, the Evangelista-Bobadilla Family Fund, Don del Pilar and Barbara Scheifler, Art and Cheryl Kuhlmann, and Elgene Tan.

The largest grant of $7,049, funded by the Special Need Children Center Foundation, will be presented to James Logan High School for an innovative vocational skills training program for students with disabilities. Through this grant, high school students with special needs will learn critical living and real-world business skills as they operate an on-demand “Colt Coffee” cart and sell their special ColtBrew concoction and other custom coffee drinks to school staff.

  • Robot kits for Alvarado Elementary School
  • A 3-D printer and college and career fair at Conley Caraballo High School.
  • Socialization and personal development activities at Decoto School for independent study students.
  • Historical re-enactment programs at Eastin Elementary.
  • A wildlife habitat at Emanuele Elementary School.
  • Outdoor environmental programs and flexible seating options at Hillview Crest.
  • A color laser printer for photography projects at Itliong Vera-Cruz Middle School.
  • Drawing tablets for advanced art students at James Logan High School.
  • A wellness center at Kitayama Elementary.
  • Technology services to elevate the student voice at Pioneer Elementary.
  • Lunchtime social, art, and play activities for young at-risk students at Searles Elementary.

The awards will be distributed at 4:00 PM on April 20, 2022 at the New Haven Unified School District office.
