WALNUT CREEK, CA — There are some 80-100 lily species and one grows right here on Mount Diablo.

The rare species, Mt. Diablo Globe Lily, is shown in this photo captured April 27 by Patch reader Fran Guidry using his iPhone 12 Pro Max.

"We enjoyed a lovely Saturday morning wildflower hike organized by the Lindsay Wildlife Museum," Fran wrote in an email to Patch. "Our hike took us to Mitchell Canyon and the Globe Lily Trail. The Mt. Diablo Globe Lily (calochortus pulchellus) also called the Mt. Diablo Fairy Lantern, is currently only known on the western slopes of Mt. Diablo."

According to the Mount Diablo Interpretive Association, the wildflower occurs only on Mount Diablo and the surrounding hills of the East Bay. It has a California Rare Plant Rank of 1B.2— when plants are rare, threatened or endangered in California and elsewhere; and fairly threatened in California. That is two ranks down from 1A, when plants are extinct.

Thank you for sharing, Fran.
