Evacuation, Shelter-In Place Orders Issued In Monterey County
The Carmel River was threatening Camp Steffani, Lower Robles Del Rio, Paso Hondo, Garzes, lower Shulte Road. Thousands are without power.
MONTEREY COUNTY, CA — The Monterey County Sheriff's Office said at 3:15 p.m. Sunday it has issued a shelter-in-place for Pebble Beach due to downed power lines, fallen trees, and road hazards until further notice.
Monterey County officials updated road closures at 2 p.m. Sunday.
- On Arroyo Seco Road, water is ponding across the road from Clark Road and Thorne Road. Proceed carefully.
- On Paraiso Spring Road, water is ponding across the road from Arroyo Seco Road and Foothill Road. Procced carefully.
- Denner Road is closed for all traffic from San Juan Grade Road to Paul Avenue.
- Elkhorn Road is closed to all traffic, as power lines are on the road at Walker Valley Road and Elkhorn Slough Reserve.
- Hartnell Road is closed to all traffic from Highway 101 to Alisal Road.
- On Laureles Grade Road, northbound lanes are closed for all traffic about 0.5 miles north of Miramonte Road.
- Lewis Road is closed at Garin Road and Hutching Court.
- Mal Paso Road is closed to all traffic from Highway 1 to Mal Paso Lane.
- Murphy Road is closed from Highway 129 and Murphy Hill Road.
- Old Stage Road is closed from Potter Road and Chualar Road.
- Paul Avenue is closed from Cornwall Street to Rogge Road.
- Rogge Road is closed from San Juan Grade Road to Paul Avenue.
Monterey County officials said at 11:40 a.m. Sunday mudslides have Laureles Grade under traffic control measures in both directions less than a mile north of Miramonte Road until further notice.
At 11:21 a.m. a shelter-in-place was issued and a full road closure ordered for areas of Arroyo Seco Road and tributary roads west of Carmel Valley Road until further notice.
Officials said there is mass movement of falling rock above Arroyo Seco Road with potential for additional slope failure.
At 9:49 a.m. Sunday, Monterey County upgraded its evacuation warnings to evacuation orders for low-lying areas of the Carmel River, effective immediately and until further notice.
The order includes areas of the Carmel River near Camp Steffani, Lower Robles Del Rio, Paso Hondo, Garzes, lower Shulte Road.
If you are in an evacuation order zone, quickly and calmly evacuate. Check with your neighbors to ensure they have been made aware of this alert.
If you have large animals or need extra time to evacuate, do so immediately.
The county said people can find current emergency notifications and location maps and sign up for Monterey County emergency notifications online.
County officials said for flood prone areas, county sand stockpiles are being refreshed. Residents are encouraged to make sandbags as needed to protect their property. There are special sand locations at Garland Park for Carmel Valley residents and Ferrasci Park for Bolsa Knolls.

Carmel CERT, California Conservation Corps (small contingent) and National Guard (small contingent) are assisting County Public Works efforts building a sandbag flood wall along the Carmel River at Dampierre Park in Carmel Valley.

Due to the rapidly changing storm conditions, all County of Monterey day-use parks and the Laguna Seca Rifle and Pistol Range will remain closed Sunday. The closure will include Toro, Jacks Peak, Manzanita, Royal Oaks, and San Lorenzo Parks.
Monterey County roads may be impacted by high winds, rain and falling trees or power lines.
Hurricane Force Wind warnings, up to 92 mph, were issued for the waters from the Big Sur coast to 60 nautical miles. The damaging winds will continue through mid-morning.
County road conditions are being continually updated online.
PG&E reports widespread power outages impacting more than 10,000 customers, and some 400,000 through the Bay Area.
The final round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, one of the most prestigious professional golf tournaments on the PGA Tour, was postponed until Monday.
