Dogs, Puppies Found Shot, Dumped In Fremont County: Sheriff

An animal cruelty investigation is ongoing after animal control officers found dead dogs and calves on the side of a road.

CANON CITY, CO -- Fremont County officials are searching for the person or people who left the bodies of several dead dogs and calves on the side of a road. Deputies and animal control officers were alerted April 12 that a number of animal carcasses were lying on the side of Fremont County Road 11, also called High Park Road in Canon City, the Fremont County Sheriff's Office said.

The incident is being investigated as an animal cruelty case, and the police are asking for the public's help.

Four black and white collie dogs ranging in age from puppies to adult, were found. X-rays showed all appeared to have been shot, a statement from the sheriff's office said. The calves appeared to have been illegally disposed of.

"It did not appear the calves were a part of an animal cruelty situation, more of an illegal dumping case," a statement from the sheriff said. "The Brand Inspector was not able to locate an owner for the calves as they were too new to have brands/tags."

None of the dogs had collars/tags/chips and the sheriff had no reports of missing dogs matching their descriptions.
