Commissioners Proclaim Transgender Day Of Remembrance
Out Boulder County will hold a ceremony and silent march this evening beginning at the Boulder County Courthouse

BOULDER, CO -- A proclamation by the Boulder County Commissioners this morning formally recognized Nov. 13-20 as Transgender Awareness Week, and Nov. 20 as the Transgender Day of Remembrance. The resolution, drafted with the help of Out Boulder County, was issued this morning.
Transgender Day of Remembrance is an annual national observance each Nov. 20 to honor those who have lost their lives due to anti-transgender violence. Out Boulder County will separately celebrate by with a ceremony at silent march that will meet at at 6 p.m. at the Courthouse on Pearl Street in Boulder tonight. The march will continue to the First United Methodist Church labyrinth for a reading of names.

Whereas, November 13 to November 20 is a week of annual celebration of the transgender community to raise awareness, educate allies, and commemorate those in the community who currently face or have lost their lives to anti-transgender violence; and
Whereas, the transgender community continues to face biased violence that has resulted in at least 22 murders in the United States so far this year; and

Whereas, the victims of this violence are disproportionately trans women of color, black trans women in particular, which demonstrates the compounding effects of transphobia, racism, and sexism; and
Whereas, transgender individuals are children, siblings, parents, aunts, and uncles, friends, partners, and community leaders;

Now, therefore, be it resolved that the week of November 13 to November 20 be declared TRANSGENDER AWARENESS WEEK culminating in the TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE on November 20 in Boulder County.
