First Measurable Snowfall Of 2018 Arrives

Boulder records an earlier-than-average 0.9 inches to start the season.

BOULDER, CO - Winter arrived on Wednesday in Boulder County. Big, fat, snowflakes began falling at about 7:30 a.m. and continued throughout the day. There was little accumulation on roads and sidewalks, but enough fell to measure 0.9 inches at the National Weather Service Boulder site, qualifying as the first snow of 2018. According to local meteorologist Matt Kelsch, the day's 30 degree low was the first official freeze of the season, and temperatures that only peaked at 38 degrees set a new record for the lowest high on Oct. 10.

The average date for the first snowfall in Boulder, according to records since 1948, is Oct. 16. Last year also provided an early hit of the fluffy stuff with an Oct. 5 snowstorm. 2016 and 2015, however, were two of the latest first snowfalls in history, at Nov. 17 and Nov. 11 respectively.
