High Winds Whip Up Grass Fire In Lyons: Sheriff

Officials believe that the wind may have broken a branch that hit power lines, sparking the blaze.

BOULDER, CO -- Amid high winds on Wednesday evening, the Boulder Sheriff's Department, the Lyons Fire Department and the Hygiene Fire Department worked quickly to extinguish a grass fire that sprung up near the 4300 block of Ute Highway, according to a release from the sheriff's department. The blaze, reported shortly after 7 p.m., was spreading rapidly due to high winds.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames before they damaged any structures, no injuries were reported, and the affected area was contained to approximately one acre. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but sheriff's department representatives believe it was most likely caused by the high winds breaking a tree branch onto power lines, creating an electrical arc.
