Longmont Weighs Joining Colorado Climate Action Coalition

In the wake of the latest National Climate Assessment, Council to consider joining statewide advocacy organization.

LONGMONT, CO -- Longmont's leaders will decide whether to join a Colorado coalition of communities advocating for state and national policies designed to address climate change at Tuesday night's council meeting. Their decision comes in the wake of the latest National Climate Assessment, released Friday, Nov. 23, which predicted severe economic, social, and environmental consequences as a result of climate change in the next few decades.

Longmont will join Boulder County, the City of Boulder, Lafayette, Louisville, and 15 other communities across the state if it signs on with the Colorado Communities for Climate Action advocacy group this week.

CC4CA strives to work with governments from the local to the national level to help facilitate the spread of information, technical assistance, funding, and other resources. The group also works to promote research and funding for clean energy technologies as well as federal assistance programs for affected communities. Policy goals for 2019 will focus on local and state climate programs, energy generation and energy efficiency, transportation, fossil fuel extraction, and solid waste reduction.

City staff recommends that Longmont join the organization at its base level, at a price tag of $10,000, explaining that joining would help the city meet its goals for renewable energy and reduced emissions.

In January, Longmont adopted a resolution supporting the goal of relying on 100 percent renewable energy sources by 2030.
