Matt Jones Takes District 3 County Commissioner Race

The democrat was heavily favored over his rivals.

BOULDER, CO -- Former state legislator Matt Jones will be the new county commissioner for District 3. With an estimated 75 percent of local ballots counted as of 1:25 a.m. Nov. 7, he had 68.96 percent of the vote. The seat was formerly held by Cindy Domenico, who was term limited.

Jones, a 63-year-old and 19-year county resident got his start in state-level politics as a state representative from 1987 to 1993. Most recently he worked from 2013 to 2018 as a state senator, serving as the deputy minority leader for Conservation, Clean Energy and Climate Change.

In his campaign, Jones was unequivocal that his top priority would be to fight fracking in the county. He believes the county needs to be powered by 100 percent renewable energy as soon as possible and to focus on affordable (and, in his words, "attainable") housing.

Other priorities included a push to see the long-promised Northwest rail line arrive in Boulder County, and a desire to ensure the Boulder area gets the federal and state dollars for reconstruction and rebuilding from the 2013 flood that it deserves.
