Missing Migrants: Hearing On Identification Of Remains Friday
An international coalition of human rights organizations and family members is asking for better transnational cooperation.

BOULDER, CO - A hearing on the identification of remains of missing migrants who have disappeared from the US-Mexico Border is coming to the CU Law School this Friday. The hearing, convened by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, is open to the public–as is a vigil for missing migrants that will take place directly after the hearing. The Forensic Border Coalition, a collaboration of forensic scientists, scholars, and human rights partner organizations, is using this hearing to call for increased U.S. cooperation with an effort that allows genetic information from unidentified remains to be shared across national borders.
The hearing will include testimony from forensic scientists, human rights experts, and the family members of missing migrants. Organizers expect that US government representatives will be present. The Forensic Border Coalition will be arguing for a formalized process that would allow large scale comparisons that would match DNA information collected from relatives of missing migrants against all DNA data from unidentified remains found on US soil. According to the Coalition, this scale of an effort has never been done, and any identification is solely on a case-by-case basis.
Friday's session is the culmination of a full week of hearings taking place at CU. More information and a full schedule can be found here.
