Rash Of Theft From Erie Cars: Police

Police urge residents to lock cars and use caution.

ERIE, CO - Within two hours early last Saturday morning, 13 vehicles were broken into in two Erie neighborhoods. In addition to credit cards, ID cards, and other valuables, a handgun was stolen from one of the cars, and police say several rounds were fired off before the thieves left the area. According to an alert from the Erie Police Department, the thefts took place between 4:30 and 6:30 a.m. in the Grandview and Sunwest neighborhoods, and only one of the vehicles was locked.

The Erie Police Department issued a warning for the community explaining that the trend for trespassers these days is to be more organized, working in teams with one getaway driver–often in either a stolen car or a car with stolen plates–will be accompanied by 2 or 3 other individuals who will walk down the street trying vehicle doors. If a vehicle door is unlocked, they will enter–and if they find a garage remote, they may enter that garage and residence.

Anyone with information regarding any vehicle trespasses or any other crimes are asked to please contact the Erie Police Department at 303-926-2800.
