Suspect Charged With Throwing Explosive Devices At Deputies

County officers were able to subdue the man with non-lethal methods.

BOULDER, CO -- A man reportedly threw two improvised explosive devices at Boulder County Sheriff's deputies and Coal Creek Canyon Fire Department officers after they were dispatched to do a welfare check in the 700 block of Copperdale Lane in unincorporated Boulder County on Sunday morning, according to a release from the Boulder County Sheriff's office. Though both devices exploded, no officers were injured.

According to the sheriff's department, the man, who has been identified as Daniel Wade Proffitt, 47, waved a knife at the deputies and asked them to kill him upon their arrival before throwing the explosives.

One deputy hit Proffitt with a bean bag round and caused him to fall, but he continued to move toward a nearby cabin. Another deputy was able to successfully deploy a taser on Proffitt, and he was subdued and taken into custody.
