World GIS Day Celebration In Boulder Wednesday
Free event includes presentations about the impacts of mapping on wildfire mitigation, air pollution, electric transport and more.

BOULDER, CO -- Boulder County residents are invited to the county courthouse for a morning of education, networking, and games in celebration of World GIS Day this Wednesday. GIS – Geographic Information Systems – is used to integrate hardware, software, and data to capture, analyze, and share geographic information in an understandable manner.
In Boulder, GIS technology is used for law enforcement, floodplain management, zoning, Open Space decisions, public health, wildfire mitigation, and more. The county gathers and stores an open database of public GIS information that can help the public visualize the impact of everything from prairie dog colonies to street centerlines on the land and communities throughout the county.
Wednesday's event will run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and will include a variety of presentations to teach attendees about the importance of good GIS data. Highlights include live demo on "Situational Awareness in Emergency Situations," a presentation about using GIS for wildfire mitigation, and several rounds of a "Where in Boulder County?" game.
