200 DIA Flights Canceled As Bitter Cold Plunges Temps Below Zero

About 200 flights into and out of Denver International Airport were canceled Thursday, causing travel headaches for travelers.

DENVER, CO — About 200 flights into and out of Denver International Airport were canceled Thursday as the region bundles up and hunkers down from a bitter cold that saw temperatures plunge well below zero degrees.

About 100 flights out of DIA were canceled Thursday, representing about 12 percent of flights, according to the flight tracking site FlightAware. Eleven flights were also delayed.

Additionally, 115 flights into DIA were also canceled, or 14 percent. An additional 19 flights into DIA saw delays.

Frustrated travelers griped on Twitter about the delays.

"I'm stuck in Denver with my flight canceled," tweeted @Skeptic_George. "Can't get a flight until tomorrow. Gonna be sitting in my hotel room, and it's 0 degrees outside."

User @sak386 tweeted: "How bad is snow storm: My daughter’s flight from Chicago to Denver for Thursday canceled. While in Denver her children (my grandchildren) were stuck at home due to schools being canceled due to snow storm. Luckily father can work from home. It’s crazy!"

Several inches of snow this week as a major winter storm rolled through Colorado. Over the last 24 hours, DIA saw 2.7 inches of snow, while parts of Denver, and the surrounding suburbs saw between 7 and 11 inches, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures will remain well below normal Thursday, the weather service said in a hazardous weather outlook issued for the region. As of 9 a.m. Thursday, temperatures plunged to 7 degrees below zero at DIA, with a wind chill that makes it feel like 22 degrees below zero.

"Wind chill may become a concern on the eastern plains tonight as winds increase," the agency said.
