Denver Airport Cancels 1,200 Flights During 'Bomb Cyclone' Storm

Traffic is snarled on Pena Boulevard and most airlines have cancelled or diverted flights to DIA. Six runways are closed for visibility

DENVER, CO – The Denver International Airport has cancelled more than 1,200 flights as heavy snow and gusting winds from a "bomb cyclone" snowstorm hit the Colorado Front Range.

The airport announced that all six runways have been closed for poor visibility and the airport itself will close. For those traveling to DIA, Pena Boulevard is closed in both directions between 49th Avenue and the airport, the Denver police tweeted around 1:15 p.m.

RTD's A-Line Trains were departing from Union Station to the airport with about a 20 minute delay, RTD announced.

"Denver International Airport (DEN) is anticipating seven to 11 inches of snow and strong winds throughout the day on Wednesday, March 13," the airport said in a statement. "Many airlines have canceled flights in advance of the storm, and flight delays and cancellations are expected throughout the day. Passengers are encouraged to confirm their flight status with their airline before arriving at the airport today and allowing plenty of extra time for the commute to the airport."
