Denver Jail Inmate Allegedly Attacked Deputy: Court Filing
Zhanda Carey, 25, is being held on no bail accused of throwing a book, and then multiple punches, at a deputy in Denver County jail.

DENVER, CO – More details were released this week about a Dec. 8 alleged attack by an inmate on a deputy at Denver County Detention Center.
Zhanda Carey, 25, is being held on no bail facing assault-on-a-peace officer charges after allegedly beating a deputy repeatedly with his fists after refusing to return to his cell. Carey was arrested in September and was being held in the Denver County jail for a violation of parole, weapons charges, criminal mischief and assault.
Around 11:25 a.m. on Dec. 8, a deputy on the second floor of the jail reportedly told Carey to return to his cell. Carey allegedly refused to do so, according to an arrest affidavit, and instead sat on a table.

After being ordered back to his cell, Carey allegedly menaced the deputy, walking toward him "in an aggressive manner." Abut 10 feet from the deputy, Carey allegedly picked up a book and threw it at him, missing him. At that point, Carey allegedly began to "strike the victim with a closed fist to the victim's face causing the victim to fall on his back," the arrest affidavit said. Then Carey jumped on top of the deputy and continued to strike him on the head and face with a closed fist five to seven times, police said.
A second deputy was also injured during the incident, but not by Carey, a spokesperson from the Denver Sheriff's Office told 9News.
