Getting Back to Business with Jesh Yancey
Jesh plays The Black Buzzard this Friday 8/26 in Denver

Jesh Yancey is breaking back into live music one show at a time, and our eyes and ears are grateful. As we break through the long period of pandemic times, this Friday, come on down to the Black Buzzard in the heart of Dencer, Colorado, to catch Yancey and co. for a night you will not soon forget. With heartfelt songs that will intrigue you with every listen, Jesh takes his studio work to a whole new level while on the stage.
Jesh began playing and writing music in 2002 and has been crafting his sound ever since. After failing out of college the first time and running off to join the Navy, Yancey found himself on the Gulf Coast with a pen in his hand and something to say where the majority of the songs for Livers and Diers emerged. His newest album release "Livers and Divers," is a bold sound from Yancey as he builds upon his classic sound.
With influences like John Prine, Guy Clark, Todd Snider and Jerry Garcia, Jesh has established a catalogue of songs with a solid groove and an honest sentiment that takes a couple listens to fully take in. "Livers and Divers" is a journey from the darkest depths of ignorance to the blinding truths of everyday life and is an attempt to jolt the listener into deeper thought while their toe starts tapping.

- It's been a long couple of years with the COVID pandemic. How did you handle creating during this time as a musician?
I spent too much money trying to learn how to turn a bedroom into a recording studio! Then I recorded some songs that I had worked up in the off time. I just released them onto digital platforms. It’s called Lonesome Demonstrations and it’s 4 songs that I did mostly on my own. I had to outsource the drums and then I got my buddy to mix and master them for me. And when I wasn’t doing that I was trying desperately to not go crazy and lose all hope!
- We're back to live music finally! What did you miss most about not being able to perform during those dark months?
I missed having a sense of purpose. I had just moved to Denver from Mobile, Alabama in July 2019. So I had no more than gotten started finding out where I could play when it all got jerked out from under me. It was tough. My wife and I teamed up before we moved out here and we decided I was going to really make a go at trying to be a full-time Musician. Perfect timing!!! But I’m still here!
- For the show, do you have any surprises up your sleeves in terms of any new songs, or possible stage collaborations?
Yes! I have some new songs that I intend to record in the next couple months that we will be debuting. I love playing new stuff to new people! I’m sure I’ll get some of my buddies from Earl Nelson & The Company and also Grits & Greens to sit in. Plenty of jams will be had!
- A Denver native, what do you love most about playing shows in the city?
I’m actually not from Denver! I’m from Alabama! But I don’t see myself leaving! Denver has a lot to offer a guy like me! Plenty of good times, good people and good Music! I love playing in these awesome venues y’all have here! I feel like Globe Hall might be my second home sometimes! I love it there! I just did a solo set there and I really enjoyed it, the room was packed and silent! Such a good time!
-Since the release of your last album "Livers and Divers," how do you think your musical stylings and possibly performance has evolved?
When I recorded Livers & Divers I was very much overwhelmed. I was in a tough place having just recently lost my dad to cancer. So I was grasping at straws and luckily I found the Musicians that played on that record. I’m so much better at being a band leader now and I’m way better at delivering the songs now. I’m really proud of how far I’ve come and I’m so fortunate to even be able to try to make this Music thing a career.
- This week you will take over The Black Buzzard with an epic live set; have you played the venue before? What are you looking the most forward to that evening?
I’ve never even been there! I can’t wait! Headlining any show in Denver is such a cool opportunity! I’m really looking forward to seeing my buddies Earl Nelson & The Company along with my other buddies Grits & Greens. I like to watch as much Music as I play. So it’s a perfect night for me! But I’ll be playing new stuff to new folks and there’s not much more fun to be had than that!
- What is your dream venue to play? In Colorado, in the U.S., and internationally?
As a songwriter I really feel like playing Luckenbach Texas has to be the pinnacle for me. I stole a Jerry Jeff Walker CD from my dad, Viva Terlingua, when I was young, and listening to it turned me into a songwriter. For Colorado venues its most assuredly Red Rocks. But I’ve managed to play several of the cool ones in the state already. Not long ago me, Joe Johnson, Shawn Nelson and Danny Shafer played at Gold Hill Inn! And earlier this year I got to open for Joshua Ray Walker at Lulu’s Downstairs in Manitou. What great experiences. As far as an International venues: any old pub in Ireland would do just fine!
- What are you excited most about when getting back onto the stage?
Sometimes I feel like the only place my anxiety can’t follow me is on stage. It’s the only place where I feel that I’m not “in the way”.
