Killed Denver Citizen Security Guard To Receive Posthumous Honor

Lucardio "Luke" Kroener, 28, was shot in LoDo after an early morning altercation with a man suspected in an earlier shooting.

DENVER, CO – Denver Police on Thursday will give a posthumous award to a security guard who was shot and killed in Denver in September, but investigators have still not solved the murder.

Thursday, the Daniels Fund will posthumously bestow the "Bill Daniels Neighborhood Hero Award" on Lucardio Kroener, a father of one, and a citizen security guard who was shot at close range and died after an altercation with a man near 14th and Market Streets early Friday, Sep. 28.

Police in October offered a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the two men allegedly involved with the shooting, but so far there has been no one charged.

The Bill Daniels Neighborhood Hero Award was established by the Daniels Fund to recognize members of our community who go “above and beyond the call of duty” and make heroic efforts to help others, a press release said. Kroener’s family members and friends will accept the award on his behalf, police said. Denver Police Chief Paul Pazen was scheduled to present the award Thursday at the Denver Police Crime Laboratory.

The family of Kroener said he was the father of a young daughter and had a girlfriend.

A GoFundMe site set up by the family raised more than $13,000 for funeral expenses and expenses for Kroener's young daughter.

Kroener's sister Liz Rado remembered her brother in a statement released by Denver7:
He was getting ready to start in the police academy and worked hard to give the world for his daughter, now she is going to grow up without her daddy. He will miss seeing her grow and Esmeralda is left without a partner in life. My mother is left without a son, we are left without a brother, an uncle, a nephew and we will miss Luke for the rest of our lives."
