📰 News we're reading
1. Pedestrian killed in Denver hit-and-run, police seeking tips on driver (denverpost.com) — Denver police are investigating a deadly hit-and-run in the Lincoln Park neighborhood after a man was struck and killed Friday night while crossing North Kalamath Street near West 11th Avenue. Investigators say a gray Honda Accord Crosstour with front passenger-side damage fled the scene, and they’re asking residents for tips as they work to identify the driver.

2. Planning to begin in Denver for American Indian Cultural Embassy (cbsnews.com) — Denver is moving ahead with planning for what could become the nation’s first American Indian Cultural Embassy, funded by $20 million approved by Denver voters in the Vibrant Denver Bond. City leaders and Indigenous organizers are eyeing First Creek Open Space near the Rocky Mountain Arsenal for a center focused on trade, arts, education, and cultural preservation, with community input and long-term sustainability planning just beginning.

3. Denver City Council to revisit cold-weather shelter funding next week (denvergazette.com) — Denver leaders are delaying a vote on adding $450,000 for hotel and ballroom space to handle overflow at city cold-weather shelters, pushing the decision to Jan. 12. As demand for beds is expected to rise up to 20%, Denver’s housing office says it needs more non-city sites so no one is turned away during freezing nights.

4. Denver firefighters need an excavator to stamp out the Leetsdale fire. Here's what we know so far (denverite.com) — A massive five-alarm fire at the nearly finished Harker Heights apartments on Leetsdale Drive is still smoldering, and Denver firefighters now need an excavator to fully extinguish hidden hot spots. The blaze shut lanes on the busy Aurora–Denver corridor, briefly cut power to 1,200 customers, and has neighbors watching closely as investigators work to determine what caused the destruction.

5. Denver's flavored vape ban sends customers across city lines (cbsnews.com) — Denver’s new voter-approved ban on flavored nicotine products is now in effect, forcing vapers to leave the city to buy their usual e-cigarettes. Denver retailers have pulled flavored products, while nearby Aurora shops are already seeing more business and some users worry the restriction could push people back to cigarettes rather than reduce addiction.
