2nd Alleged Sex Assault Arrest For Former Lakewood Agent

Randall Shawn Butler, 37, out on bond, was taken into custody Tuesday after a second woman accused him of sexually assaulting her in June.

LAKEWOOD, CO – A former Lakewood police agent, out on bond after being charged with sexually assaulting a woman in Denver in November, 2018, was arrested a second time Tuesday in Lakewood after being accused of a similar on-duty attack the previous summer.

A female victim called the Lakewood Police tip line after Butler's arrest in December, saying that she too had been sexually attacked by Butler, Lakewood Police Spokesman John Romero said.

She told police on the evening of June 8, 2018, while he was on duty, Butler offered her a ride home, and tried to sexually assault her. The location of the second incident was not immediately available, Romero said.

Butler will appear in Jefferson County District Court Wednesday facing charges of criminal attempted sexual assault, unlawful sexual contact, official misconduct and "official oppression," a press release from the department said.

Butler was first arrested by Denver police on Dec. 5 after a woman called a sexual assault line in Denver. The victim told police Butler had picked her up in his patrol car late at night on Nov. 16 when she was stranded near Sheridan Boulevard and 10th Avenue. Instead of driving her home, as he had offered, Butler allegedly drove the victim to a vacant parking lot near 25th and Sheridan and allegedly sexually assaulted her, driving away in his squad car and leaving her in the parking lot, prosecutors said.

“In this difficult moment, all of us at the Lakewood Police Department are thinking of the victim in this case,”Lakewood Police Chief Daniel McCasky said in a statement. “As I’ve said before, actions such as these will never be tolerated. These despicable actions in no way represent the men and women of the Lakewood Police Department who are committed to serving and protecting our community with integrity. We will do everything to assist the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office in prosecuting this case to its fullest extent. Right now, our top priority is the pursuit of justice for the victim.”

The Lakewood Police Department is still asking that anyone with any information on Butler’s possible unlawful actions while a member of the Lakewood Police Department to call the tip-line at 303-763-6800.
