3rd Sexual Assault Accusation For Former Lakewood Cop

Former Lakewood Agent Randall Butler was arrested a third time, accused of assaulting a woman in July, 2014 while on duty.

LAKEWOOD, CO – A former Lakewood police agent is facing a third accusation from a woman who alleged he sexually assaulted her while on-duty.

Randall Shaun Butler, 37, turned himself in Jan. 24 and was booked into the Jefferson County Jail facing charges of unlawful sexual conduct, official misconduct and "official oppression."

This time, as with the two other accusations, Butler is being investigated for an incident where he offered a woman a ride home in a patrol car while on duty. On July 29, 2014, according to allegations, Butler "engaged in unlawful sexual conduct" with the woman, according to a press statement from the Lakewood Police.

“These new charges come as a result of this brave woman stepping forward to see that justice is served," said Lakewood Police Chief Daniel McCasky, in a press release. "We admire her bravery and implore anyone else who may have been victimized to step forward and report these crimes. As I’ve said in the past, our top priority is the pursuit of justice for these victims.”

Butler was employed as an agent for the Lakewood Police starting in January of 2013, said John Romero, communications spokesperson.

Here's a timeline of accusations against Butler:

  • On Dec. 5, 2018, Denver police arrested Butler, investigating charges of sexual assault. On Nov. 16, a woman called a Denver sex assault hotline alleging that Butler had offered to drive her home in his patrol car after she was stranded near Sheridan and 10th Avenue. Instead, he allegedly drove her to a vacant parking lot and sexually assaulted her then drove away in his squad car, leaving her in the parking lot. As Butler was being investigated for the Denver allegations, he resigned from the department Nov. 26, 2018 the Lakewood Police Department said.
  • While out on bond for the Denver charges, Butler was arrested a second time, Jan. 8, 2019, after a woman came forward who alleged that on evening of June 8, 2018, while he was on duty, Butler offered her a ride home, and tried to sexually assault her.
  • On Jan. 24, 2019 Butler turned himself in at Jefferson County Jail in connection with the allegations from July of 2014.

Butler's actions while employed for multiple years as a Lakewood agent have tarnished the department, McCasky said earlier in the month.

"[A]ctions such as these will never be tolerated," McCasky said in early January. "These despicable actions in no way represent the men and women of the Lakewood Police Department who are committed to serving and protecting our community with integrity. We will do everything to assist the First Judicial District Attorney's Office in prosecuting this case to its fullest extent. Right now, our top priority is the pursuit of justice for the victim."

The Lakewood Police Department are still asking anyone with knowledge of any other possible misconduct by Butler to come forward or call the tip-line at 303-763-6800.
