Doctor Pleads Guilty In Lakewood Crash That Killed Mom And Child

Chris Cumsille, 46, struck a group of 5 cars at a Lakewood stoplight. The chain reaction crash killed a mother and child and injured one.

GOLDEN, CO – A driver who killed a woman and her three-year-old son in a six-vehicle chain reaction crash in Lakewood in November, 2017 pleaded guilty in Jefferson County District Court Wednesday.

Chris John Cumsille, 46, pled guilty to three felony counts in the vehicular homicide death of 43-year-old Anna Huffman and her 3-year-old son Jason Huffman. Lianne Nelson, a third victim, was also injured in the chain-reaction collision.

Cumsille pled guilty to child abuse resulting in death; vehicular homicide by reckless driver; and vehicular assault.

On Nov. 13, 2017 at 7:17 a.m. Lakewood police were called to a six-car collision with multiple injuries at West Alameda and Oak Street. Five cars were stopped at a red light when the car driven by Cumsille rear-ended one of the vehicles, causing a chain reaction.

Cumsille 45, told police he "blacked out" at the wheel of his black pickup truck around 7:15 a.m., according to an arrest affidavit. Cumsille's truck, traveling 55 miles-per-hour, rear-ended Huffman's minivan killing her. Jason Huffman, age 3, was taken to Colorado Children's Hospital where he died two days later of his injuries.

A blood-draw of Cumsille revealed that he had THC in his system two hours after the crash, the arrest affidavit said.

Cumsille was listed as owner and physician at an orthotics medical practice in Lakewood.

Cumsille had a history of 16 previous driving violations, including DUI, the arrest affidavit stated. Cumsille was taken into custody, in 2017, but posted a $20,000 bond and was freed.

As part of his guilty plea, Cumsille did not plead guilty to DUI.

Anna Huffman was a mother of two, according to a GoFundMe page set up by a family member.

Cumsille is scheduled for sentencing on Feb. 22 at 8:30 a.m. and could potentially receive a prison sentence of up to 25 years, the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office said.
