Lakewood Shooter Dies After Fleeing In Pickup Truck– UPDATE

BREAKING: A 51-year-old man was killed after exchanging gunfire with Lakewood Police in an incident that locked down schools Monday.

LAKEWOOD, CO – A man died after shooting at police from his Lakewood home, then driving off, firing at police and causing a chase that locked down local schools, Lakewood Police said.

Anthony Lee Montoya, 51, appears to have been killed by gunshot wounds fired by Lakewood police agents, police said Monday.

The incident began around 8:30 a.m., when agents with the Lakewood Police Department were called to a house on the 6400 block of West Mexico Avenue near Sanderson Creek close to West Jewell Avenue and South Harlan Circle. Emergency callers had reported multiple shots being fired. Police said a man, now identified as Montoya, was "firing off multiple rounds at-will, hitting other homes in the neighborhood," in a statement.

Montoya then fled the house and drove off north in a white pickup truck, firing shots at police following him. Agents returned fire, according to the Lakewood police statement.

Montoya's pickup lost control and crashed through the fences of two yards near West Mexico Avenue and South Harlan Street.

Montoya was taken to a local hospital where he died of his injuries. No officers or bystanders were injured in the incident, police said.

"As is standard with all officer involved shootings, the Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) will handle the investigation of this incident," a statement from John Romero, communications spokesperson said.

The incident caused nearby schools be locked down and local residents were told to shelter in place.

The incident is still under investigation.
