Here are the top stories in Lakewood today:

  1. Masterpiece Cakeshop is trying to bring a case to the Colorado Supreme Court after refusing to make a cake celebrating transgender joy. The cakeshop’s owner, Jack Phillips, asks “Can the government force me to express messages that I can't in good conscience express?” His decision has been considered illegal under the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act. A statement released by the customer who ordered the cake’s representatives reads, “We strongly believe that businesses should not be able to deny services to customers because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.” Find out more through Denver 7. 2. Metro Denver's air quality has been continuously declining since 2015. Declining air quality accounts for 11,000 deaths across the nation each year and puts low-income people of color at high risk. Discover more at Axios.
  3. There are still two in-person Colorado storm spotters training sessions this spring, one of which is in Lakewood. This year alone, there have been six hundred new storm spotters statewide. There were also two training sessions conducted in Spanish, hopefully setting a new precedent. Read more at 9 News.
  4. A pedestrian was killed after being hit by a car on Wadsworth Boulevard in Lakewood. The road was closed for about two hours on Thursday night but has since reopened. Learn more at Denver 7.
