Shooting Spree: 5 Killed, Officer Injured In Denver, Lakewood

Five people are dead in what police called a "killing spree."

LAKEWOOD, CO — Five people are dead after a string of shootings Monday night that began in Denver and ended in Lakewood, police said. One of the five who were killed was the gunman, according to officials.

Two women were shot to death and a man was injured just after 5 p.m. near First Avenue and Broadway, Denver Police Chief Paul Pazen said in a news conference Monday night.

Then another man was shot and killed near Williams Street and 12th Avenue, Pazen said.

Officers were called to the area and they worked to "stop this suspect from this killing spree," Pazen said.

More shootings were reported near Eighth Avenue and Zuni Street, as well as Sixth Avenue and Cherokee Street, but no injuries were reported, police said.

Then the gunman shot a person to death around 6 p.m. near Colfax Avenue and Kipling Street in Lakewood, according to police. A clerk was also shot in the Hyatt House and hospitalized, but their condition was not known.

The shooter ran out of the hotel and shot at officers, injuring one, police said. The officers fired back and killed the gunman, according to authorities.

The identities of those who were shot have not been released.

As of Monday evening, the officer who was shot was in surgery, according to The Denver Post.

“We just ask everyone in our community for their thoughts and prayers for that agent and their family,” Lakewood police spokesperson John Romero told the Post.
