Avon Activates Heat Protocols, Opens Cooling Centers

Extreme heat and humidity this week are prompting towns/cities to open cooling centers and abide by state hot weather protocols.

AVON, CT — With extreme hot and humid weather in the forecast for most of this week, the town is designating two prominent local sites as special cooling centers.

According to the town, on Monday, the Avon Senior Center and the Avon Free Public Library are the cooling centers.

They will be available for any resident seeking relief from the extreme heat and humidity beginning today (Monday, Aug. 11) at noon through Thursday, Aug. 14.

The Avon Senior Center is located at 635 West Avon Road, and staff can be reached at 860-675-4355 with questions.

Its cooling center will be available Monday, Aug. 11, through Thursday, Aug. 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Avon Free Public Library is located at 281 Country Club Road, and staff can be reached at 860-673-9712 with questions.

That cooling center will be available Monday, August 11, through Thursday, August 14, from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Avon's announcement comes after Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont implemented statewide, hot-weather protocols.
