Avon Announces Re-Opening Of Warming Centers

Frigid temperatures are expected next week, with Gov. Ned Lamont issuing cold-wether protocols on Friday, Jan. 17.

AVON, CT — With Gov. Ned Lamont reinstating cold-weather protocols on Friday for next week, the Town of Avon announced it is doing likewise.

Frigid weather is expected next week with temperatures remaining below freezing throughout the daytime and overnight temperatures in the single digits.

As a result, the Avon Senior Center and the Avon Free Public Library will be open during normal business hours and will serve as warming centers.

Officials said town facilities will be closed on Monday, Jan. 20, in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday.

Warming centers are at:

• Avon Senior Center; 635 West Avon Road; 860-675-4355; Hours: Tuesday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

• Avon Free Public Library; 281 Country Club Road; 860-673-9712; Hours: Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

If residents are in need of protection from the extreme cold when warming centers are not available, call non-emergency dispatch at 860-409-4200 and the town will make arrangements to provide access to a warming facility.
