Avon Historical Society Receives Grant from CT Humanities
The grant is for 'Moments in Avon's History', a banner project that is a joint effort between AHS and the Avon Public Library.

From AHS: The Avon Historical Society announces the receipt of a grant from CT Humanities to produce eleven (11) banners highlighting Avon’s history. The banner project, “Moments in Avon’s History,” is a joint effort between the Avon Historical Society and the Avon Free Public Library.
These mobile exhibits will be in the form of retractable, portable banners each telling a different aspect of Avon’s history, with historic and current photos, covering topics such as early education, agriculture, religion, transportation, etc. Both organizations have a distinguished record of presenting Avon history in exhibits and public programs. The idea with these portable banners is to bring history on the road to town offices, businesses, schools and retail shops on a rotating basis. These educational banners are being designed to pique the interest of the general public in local history.
A professional graphic design firm will design the banners using specifications from the National Park Service. Writing the text will be experts on individual topics, along with the Town of Avon Historian and a history student from Central Connecticut State University.

The banners will be unveiled at a public opening on Saturday, July 29 at 11:00am in Alsop Community Room of the Avon Free Public Library. They will remain on display through August outside the Marion Hunter Local History Room, and then appear around town beginning in September.
The grant proposal was written by Avon Historical Society member Norm Sondheimer who commented, “Avon is rich in history. We are delighted to be able to show it off.” In addition, Avon Town Historian Nora Howard said, “the Society and the Library have created a superb project to bring more Avon history out in to the open – where it belongs. History will be popping up in unexpected places, and that’s a wonderful thing.”
