Avon Opens Warming Centers Due To Cold

The town Thursday morning announced cold-weather protocols through Monday, Jan. 22.

AVON, CT — With bone-chilling temperatures expected in the coming days, Avon officials have announced the opening of local warming centers for those who need them.

Town officials said "extreme cold temperatures with very low wind chill values" are expected through Monday, Jan. 22.

As a result, the Town of Avon is urging folks to use the Avon Senior Center and the Avon Free Public Library during normal business hours to serve as warming centers.

The locations and hours of the warming centers through Monday are as follows:

• Avon Senior Center; 635 West Avon Road; 860=675-4355; Hours: Thursday and Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Monday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

• Avon Free Public Library; 281 Country Club Road; 860-673-9712; Hours: Thursday 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 1 to 5 p.m., and Monday 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Residents in need of protection from the extreme cold when warming centers are not available can call non-emergency dispatch at 860-409-4200 and the town will make arrangements to provide access to a warming facility.
