Avon Police Arrest Man in Attempted Radio Shack Robbery

A Simsbury man walked into Radio Shack in Avon last week, locked the door and demanded money from the cash register, police said.

Store employees immediately reported the situation to the police at 3:19 p.m. on Feb. 28 and detained Leo Patrick Donahue, 30, until police arrived minutes later, according to Avon police spokeswoman Lt. Kelly Walsh.

Donahue, of 51 Hopmeadow St., Apt. B3, Weatogue, came into the store that day and then put on a mask. The two store employees present told police that they thought Donahue had a gun when he put a hand in his pocket, but police said that he did not brandish a weapon.

Police charged him with first-degree robbery, as a result, which a Hartford Superior Court judge reduced to a second-degree charge on March 1, according to the Connecticut judicial website. He was also charged with disorderly conduct and second-degree threatening.

There weren't any customers in the store during the incident and nothing was stolen, police said.

The judge lowered his initial $100,000 bond to $75,000, but Donahue is still being held in custody.

Donahue is scheduled to appear in court again on March 15.
