Gas Odor Detected at Avon Police Department Building [Update, 1:39 p.m., March 11]
No injuries were reported.
Avon firefighters reported to a possible natural gas leak at an Avon Police Department building Monday morning, police confirmed.
Department officials smelled gas odor at the department's back building and called the Avon Volunteer Fire Department around 10:45 a.m., police said. No one was injured, police said.
Avon police Lt. Kelly Walsh wrote in an email to Patch that there didn't turn out to be a gas leak and that "it appears to be that someone didn't turn the stove knob all the way off."

After investigating the incident, firefighters left the police department before 11:30 a.m. and the gas company also reported to the scene, police said.
"There are no further issues," Walsh said.

The department is located at 60 West Main St., not far from the fire station. The small brownstone facility where the gas odor was detected is detached from the main police department building. The building is used for swearing-in ceremonies and other department functions.
Correction: Patch was originally told that there was a natural gas leak at the building, but police later said that while officials smelled gas odor and called the fire department, there was no leak. The article was updated at 1:38 p.m. to reflect the new information.
