Patch: What attracted you to the orthodontic field, and how did you get started?
Kuhlberg: My Pediatrician was my neighbor when I was growing up. He was a role model in many ways. Science and medicine always fascinated me. My interest in orthodontics came later when I became a patient after college. The combination of art and science, 3-D problem solving, engineering and even psychology all contributed to developing my pursuit of an orthodontic career.
Patch: What kind of services does your practice specialize in?
Kuhlberg: We provide orthodontic services for patients of all ages and strive to inform our patients of all of their treatment options and select the best approach for each individual. My practice is limited to the specialty of orthodontics, ensuring the highest levels of patient care.
Patch: How do you and your practice stay up-to-date with healthcare advancements?
Kuhlberg: We continuously learn about new approaches to orthodontic treatment and aim to integrate the best of new technologies. We recently renovated the office with new, state-of-the-art dental equipment.
Patch: What parts of your job do you find most challenging?
Kuhlberg: Patients with special medical or dental problems present new and unique challenges. Working with our patients to overcome those individual problems can actually be especially rewarding. Meeting those challenges is one of our focuses and something we take great pride in addressing. Seeing our patients thrive and succeed when treatment is finished is priceless.
The profession of orthodontics has a quite detailed analysis that defines the quality of a treatment outcome. While a “perfect” treatment result is always the goal, achieving perfection is nearly impossible. So striving to provide every patient with the best results for them remains the primary focus.
Patch: What’s your favorite thing about being an orthodontist?
Kuhlberg: The saying, “it’s better to give than receive,” is true for being a doctor. To help others is a great honor, and to help patients not just be well but make them even better is the greatest reward.
Patch: How does your training, experience and specialties in your field distinguish you from others in your profession?
Kuhlberg: My career started as a professor at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine. I am fortunate to have developed a strong research and teaching background in the science and biomechanics of orthodontics. This added expertise allows me to understand the basis of all orthodontic devices. This scientific background helps find novel solutions to unique patient problems.
Patch: What does a typical day on the job look like for you?
Kuhlberg: A typical day is most enjoyable when it is a diverse assortment of meeting and starting new patients, seeing the smile of patients after removing their braces and continuing treatment on many active patients.
Patch: Do you have any upcoming events in your organization/community?
Kuhlberg: Soon we will be re-opening our newly remodeled main clinical operatories. We sponsor many local sports teams, theater groups and student activities.
