Memorial Day In Canton: Parade Steps Off Monday At Local School
Memorial Day is a solemn mix of remembering U.S. soldiers killed in the line of duty and enjoying the unofficial start of the summer season.
CANTON, CT — The unofficial start of summer kicks off in Canton this weekend with a mix of seasonal fun and solemn remembrances of Memorial Day Weekend's true meaning.
All town offices and schools are closed for the day on Monday, May 26, with Canton hosting its annual Memorial Day Parade that day.
Canton's Memorial Day Parade is scheduled for 10 a.m. that day.
The events all start with a "Veterans Coffee Hour" at 8:30 a.m. in the multi-purpose room on the lower level of the Canton Community Center at 40 Dyer Ave. Guests should park in the back lot of the Community Center.
Then, veterans and groups should start to gather at 9:30 a.m. in the Canton Intermediate School parking lot, 39 Dyer Ave. The parade will begin at 10 a.m.
If rain is forecasted on Memorial Day, a decision to cancel the parade will be made Sunday evening or Monday morning before 8 a.m.
In the event of a cancellation, the Veterans Coffee Hour will be held at 9 a.m. in the Canton High School cafeteria, and a ceremony will be held in the auditorium at 10 a.m.
Contact Melissa Denton at 860-693-7841 or veterans@townofcantonct.org if interested in marching.
