Prepping For Disaster In Avon: Public Forums On Topic Start Tuesday
The Avon Emergency Management Department is hosting a three-part lecture series on disaster preparedness starting Tuesday, Sept. 2.
AVON, CT — Public emergencies can happen at any time, anywhere, and Avon officials in September will be busy getting the word out on what folks can do to prepare.
That's why, starting Tuesday, Sept. 2, Avon Emergency Management Director Bruce Appell is organizing a three-part series to help folks do just that.
In addition, the local fire department has a major exhibition planned later in the month showcasing the town's emergency responders.

Appell's program includes a three-part lecture series "exploring how Avon prepares for emergencies, protects residents, and engages the community."
The discussions are on Sept. 2, Sept. 9, and Sept. 16 at the Avon Volunteer Fire Department Co. 1 headquarters, 25 Darling Drive, Avon, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

There, Appell and guest speakers will discuss:
• Tuesday, Sept. 2, "Ready for Anything: Disaster Preparedness in Connecticut" — Folks can learn about weather threats (like hurricanes and winter storms) and how state/local emergency systems work together.
• Tuesday, Sept. 9, "Here in Avon: Local Emergency Management" — Learn how Avon's public safety departments (police, fire, emergency management) work together to protect the community.
• Tuesday, Sept. 16, "Neighbors Helping Neighbors: The Avon Volunteer Fire Department" — Program focuses on how AVFD members train, what incidents they handle, and how they support the community beyond emergency responses.
In addition to the three lectures, the AVFD is also hosting "Emergency Services Day" on Sunday, Sept. 21, at Avon High School, 510 West Avon Road.
This event will be from noon to 4 p.m. and it will feature multiple demonstrations, fire apparatus tours, the Avon Police Department, the Lifestar helicopter, and the National Guard.
