'Route 91 Bandit' Accused Of Robbing Banks In Avon, Along I-91

The FBI is looking for an "armed and dangerous" man who they accused of robbing 11 banks along I-91, including Liberty Bank in Avon.

AVON, CT — The FBI is looking for a man they've dubbed the "Route 91 Bandit," who they said is accused of robbing 11 banks up and down Interstate 91 — including Liberty Bank in Avon.

The FBI Boston Division is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information that leads to the identification, arrest and conviction of the man, who they said is armed and dangerous.

In a news release, officials described the suspect as a white male of medium build who is between 5'6" and 5'8" tall. He has blue eyes and light-colored hair, typically wears a hood or hat and white sneakers, and is believed to be operating a newer Nissan sedan, the FBI said.

The man is accused of robbing Liberty Bank (27 Dale Road, Avon) on Nov. 19, 2021, at around 4:42 p.m. The FBI said he's also accused of robbing banks in Enfield, Somers and East Windsor (twice), as well as in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont.

In at least six of those robberies he attempted to enter the vault, the FBI said, and it said he has threatened the use of a firearm.

"In the interest of public safety, we're asking anyone with information about this individual to contact us immediately. We need to put a stop to this man's crime spree before someone gets hurt," Joseph R. Bonavolonta, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Boston Division, said in a statement. "He's considered armed and dangerous so please take a close look at these images and reach out to us if you know who he is."
