Update: As Cold Rolls In, Avon Closing Town Hall Early

AVON,CT — With the wind and rain giving way to freezer-like conditions later Friday, Avon town officials announced Friday it is closing town facilities early.

According to the town, "due to the icy road conditions anticipated for this afternoon and evening as the temperature drops, town offices, the Avon Free Public Library and the Avon Senior Center will close at 3 p.m. on Friday."

"Thank you for your understanding. Please drive cautiously if you have to be on the roads and stay safe," wrote the town.

It was a day of multiple impacts on the town during the storm.

Route 167 is shut down at Sudbury Way, according to the state Department of Transportation.

As wind-whipped rain slams the state, it appears a tree has come down and landed in some power lines in that area, according to the DOT, which reported the incident at 6:38 a.m.

It is still "unknown" when the situation will be cleared up, according to the DOT.

Meanwhile, Route 10 is closed in Avon at Cider Brook Road, according to the DOT, because of wires down in the roadway, as reported at 8:17 a.m.

That situation is also listed as "unknown" as to when it will be cleared up.

As of 8:23 a.m., Eversource Energy had nearly 21 percent of Avon without power, for a total of 1,834 customers missing electricity.

Because of the wind and rain storm, Avon students did get an early start to their Christmas breaks, with school being canceled today.

Town of Avon offices are still slated to open Friday, but the opening is being delayed to 10 a.m., according to town officials.
