Yale Ornithologist to Speak at Avon Public Library

Dr. Richard Prum will speak on the science of bird flight December 3.

AVON, CT - On Saturday, December 3 at 2:00 pm, The Avon Public Library hosts Dr. Richard Prum, world renowned ornithologist at the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, for a talk on the science of bird flight. This talk is a special presentation of “Avon Reads One Book” series of events, which explores the themes of David McCullough’s book “The Wright Brothers”.

Dr. Prum is Curator of Ornithology and Head Curator of Vertebrate Zoology at the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History and evolutionary ornithologist with broad interests in avian biology. He has done extensive research on diverse topics, including avian phylogenetics, behavioral evolution, feather evolution and development, and aesthetic evolution. Dr. Prum has conducted field work throughout the Neotropics and Madagascar, and has studied fossil theropods in China.

“Avon Reads One Book” special events:

• Ongoing: The community is invited to help build a museum quality scale model of the 1903 Wright Flyer. Please call the library for more information & "build session" schedule.

• A Gilder Lehrman panel exhibit of The Progressive Era; an 1881 bicycle made by the Pope Manufacturing Company on loan from the Connecticut Historical Society; a model of the 1903 Wright Flyer on loan from the New England Air Museum; and a gallery display depicting the Wright Brothers story.

Thanks to the sponsorship of Farmington Bank, Avon Education Foundation and the Friends of the Avon Public Library, the library is able to present this diverse lineup of distinguished speakers, exhibits & One Book events.
