Accidental Gun Discharge Leads To Arrests

Berlin Police were called by Midstate Medical Center after a woman was treated for a gunshot wound last week.

Officers then pieced together the circumstances, which led to two arrests.

According to the BPD, Douglas Kogut, 31, of Wallingford, was driving on the Berlin Turnpike with Amy Whelan, 35, of Prospect, when a gun accidentally went off and shot the Whelan in the leg.

Berlin and Meriden Police had to decide if the accident occurred in Berlin or Meriden. When it was determined to have happened in Berlin, officers investigated and charges were filed. The gun that was shot was traced back to a theft in Southington.

Kogut was charged with Criminal possession of a revolver/pistol, Theft of a firearm, unlawful discharge of a firearm and Carrying a pistol/revolver without a permit. Whelan was charged with Theft of a firearm.

Untimely Death

Residents driving on Porter's Pass Monday may have thought they were seeing a scene out of "CSI" as police officers walked in and out of a house with gloves on investigating what was called "an untimely death" by Berlin Police.

There is no criminal investigation into the death. 

Two Burglaries

Berlin Deputy Chief John Klett said the two burglaries this week do not appear to be related.

The first on Metacomet Drive was an attempted break-in as there was no entrance into the house. The one on Worthington Ridge saw the suspect or suspects take one specific thing. This may mean somebody who had prior knowledge of the person or house may have performed the burglary.
