Berlin High School's 2022 Valedictorian, Salutatorian Announced

The valedictorian will study chemical engineering at Notre Dame and the salutatorian will major in accounting at the University of Richmond.

BERLIN, CT — Berlin High School announced its 2022 valedictorian and salutatorian today.

Valedictorian: Jacob Smalley

Smalley earned high honors status for all four years of his high school career. He is a U.S. Presidential Scholar Program nominee and a Harvard Book Award recipient who was named an AP Scholar with Distinction.

He is a member of the Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society and the National Honor Society. Additionally, he played four years of basketball and football at Berlin High School, and was named a CCC All-Academic for both sports.

Outside of academics, Smalley serves as a house leader in the Upbeat peer leadership program, has coached Berlin youth flag football, and has volunteered at Sacred Heart Church food drives and McGee Middle School drop-ins.

Smalley plans to study chemical engineering at the University of Notre Dame.

Salutatorian: Saige Beatman

Beatman earned high honor status for 15 consecutive quarters at Berlin High School. She was named an AP Scholar and earned the Gettysburg College Book Award for Distinguished Study of American History and the Seal of Biliteracy for Spanish.

Beatman served as an Upbeat house leader, team leader of the BHS Unity Team and a BHS student ambassador. She was a member of the BHS Equity Advocate Committee, the Safe School Climate Committee, the debate team, the youth and government club and the National Honor Society.

She was nominated as a Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Hartford Executive Representative, and will be attending the 2022 Conference of National Affairs with a Holocaust education proposal.

Beatman will major in accounting at the University of Richmond and plans to attend law school one day.
