Berlin Parks Announces Scarecrow and Fall Foliage Festival Winners

Berlin's 12th annual Scarecrow and Fall Foliage Festival was held October 8th.

BERLIN, CT - The Berlin Parks and Recreation Department has announced the winners of the 12th annual Scarecrow and Fall Foliage Festival which was held on Saturday, October 8th. Scarecrows will welcome in the fall until October 30th. The 2016 Berlin Best Scarecrow was awarded to Dance Legacy – Caroline’s Dance Center LLC with their Beauty and the Beast Scarecrows and other characters from the story.

First place in the adult category went to the Berlin Democratic Town Committee with their donkey dressed as Uncle Sam. First place in the Children’s division the Berlin Free Library scarecrows honoring the 50th anniversary of “It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown “ Second place went to Happy Halloween trick or treaters with their decorated door made by Girl Scout Troop 66495, Leader Marilisa Lazzara. First place in the Family division were the Nowik family Michelle, Henry III, Henry IV and Mc Kinley. Their teal pumpkin headed scarecrow is a representative of the Teal Pumpkin project making townspeople aware of an allergy – friendly house for trick or treating. They share the first place title with the Rienhardt family: Kelly, Andrew, Rhiannon and Mathilda. Their scarecrow from the movie the Nightmare Before Christmas was Jack Skellington the king of Halloween town. Second place went to the Meriden, New Britain, Berlin YMCA with their scarecrow telling about the YMCA ‘s program offerings. The Business division first place went to the Town of Berlin Visiting Nurses and “Maude the scary nurse”. Second place was a shared title with Dance Step’s hula skirted scarecrow dancer and Stop and Shop with Ashe, pokemon and poke balls. Winners of the Scarecrow and Fall Foliage festival will be able to choose a gift card for a Berlin business or they may donate their winnings to a charity of their choice. Judges for the event included Berlin Mayor Mark Kaczynski, Jen Ochoa, Director of Community, Recreation and Parks Services, CT Senator from the 6th district Terry Gerratana, and candidate for State Representative, Chris Morrelli. Assisting the Parks and Recreation Department with children’s activities were Upbeat Peer Leaders Kara Boninsegna, Hailey Haupfeld, Morgan Jones, Alexa Lanteri and UpBeat Director Jack Rudy.
