BPD Avoid Stand-Off With Quick Arrest

Berlin man refused to come out of his house for a short period of time.

 

Berlin Police received a call about a domestic dispute at about 8:45 p.m. Saturday night, which resulted in an arrest of a 22-year old man on multiple charges.

Colin McBriarty assaulted his girlfriend and refused to allow her to call the police by breaking her phone according to police sources. McBriarty then drove to his residence at 57 Vivian Drive where police found him. His girlfriend told police he had a weapon so police attempted to communicate with him to get him to come out of the house.

McBriarty refused to exit the home and Berlin Police called New Britain SWAT.

A family member communicated with McBriarty and he surrendered to police as the SWAT team arrived. SWAT swept the house to make sure there were no other people inside and to attempt to find the weapon. No weapon was found inside the house.

McBriarty is charged with third-degree assault, second-degree strangulation, interfering with an officer, disorderly conduct by intimidation, first-degree unlawful restraint, second-degree unlawful restraint, second-degree breach of peace, third-degree criminal mischief, second-degree threatening, second-degree reckless endangerment and two counts of interfering with an emergency call.

McBriarty has a history of trouble with the Berlin Police Dept.

Three years ago, Colin McBriarty and his brother Kyle were arrested and charged with a hate crime for a a brutal beating of a black man last November at their residence at 57 Vivian Drive. It was a premeditated hate crime, according to Berlin police who took several months to piece together the suspects.
