GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

Berlin 131, Bulkeley 7

The Berlin girls ran very well today. 

"We have big meets coming up against Middletown, Bristol Central and the Penn Relays," Berlin coach Steve Soucy said. "We were running against the clock today in preparation for those meets and came up with several career best times."

Nicole Sylvain ran 12:51 in the 3,200m lowering her career best from 13:05.  Kristen Madeia ran 5:47 in her first attempt at the 1,600m and freshman Taylor Lupini got her first career win in the high jump with a mark of 4-foot-8. 

Kate Piotrowicz (Shot and Discus) and Catherine Voelpel (400m and 200m) were winners in two individual events each.  Briana Cass won two events (100m hurdles and Triple Jump) and placed 2nd in another (High Jump). 

Other event winners: 4x800m Relay (Carbonell, Voelpel, Parillo, Sylvain), 4x100m Relay (Tavarozzi, Cass, Lapila, Ditmar), Gina Lapila 300m Hurdles, Alex Carbonell 800m, 4x400m Relay (Madeia, Voelpel, Carbonell, Lapila), Meaghan Trzasko Jav, Shannon Mahoney Long Jump, Liz Orsini Pole Vault. 

"Since the girls started the season on March 19th coach Rosek and I have worked them really hard pretty much every day," Soucy said. "The holiday weekend was their first rest period and they came out of it in the form we were hoping for. The next three weeks will be another hard cycle with the goal of peaking for the MM meet at the end of May."

BOYS TENNIS

Brookfield 6, Berlin 1

The boys had a tough day in Brookfield.

Number two singles player Peter Hogan was not feeling well, the rest of the singles lineup had to all move up a spot and while they competed well they were overwhelmed.

The bright spot on the day surely was Dan Rombola, back from his hand injury. The sophomore easily handled a Brookfield senior at number one singles, 6-1, 6-0. Matt Trevethen also played well at number three singles despite falling 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. 

Berlin is at Tolland Thursday.

BOYS LACROSSE

Berlin 15, Rocky Hill 2

In a match-up of two first-year varsity programs, the Redcoats proved that they are ready to take their game to the next level with a decisive, 15-2 victory over visiting Rocky Hill. 

"The first half was a little sloppy, but we made some adjustments at halftime and the boys came out determined to clean up the penalties and play some good lacrosse,"  Berlin coach Scott Rossi said.

After a quick goal by the Terriers to start the third quarter, the Redcoats' defense, anchored by Tyler Bouchard, Wojtek Zak, and Kyle Bolduc, put the clamps on and didn't allow another quality shot on goal. 

Berlin then went on a nine-goal scoring streak to end the game. The Redcoats distributed the ball well and worked efficiantly on offense. Sean Sullivan led all scorers with four goals, followed by Brandon Ralph (3), Nick Mangiafico (2), Greg Buck (2), Ryan Wearne (1), Andrew Alessi (1), Nathan Giaccone (1), and Cameron Criniti (1).

Berlin's junior varsity program also had similar success in their match-up with Rocky Hill. After a slow start, the Redcoats managed to come away with a 6-3 win. Jordan Kradas and Geoff Main led the way with two goals apiece.

Both teams will be in action again this Friday, April 13, when the Redcoats host Tolland's JV at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity take the field at 7 p.m. at Scalise Field.
